Course description

St Thomas's Community Network is offering a Hairdressing programme bespoke to individuals needs.  The programme will be specifically aimed at 16-18 year old NEETs within the local community and surrounding areas who wish to make a career in this particular sector or have an interest in hairdressing.  Needs of the community will be met by delivering within a small, non threatening environment based in a community centre where we can adapt for our learners needs.  Males will be encouraged to participate as well as females.  Learners who are intersted will be invited for an interview and undertake initial assessment to see if they have additional support needs which St Thomas's may be able to help with.  This will include Maths & English.  The programme will be planned over 40 weeks allowing time for annual leave and any absences should they arise.

Course content

The Level 1 qualification will enable learners to gain the basic knowledge of hairdressing principles and practical skills.  This includes plaiting and twisting hair, shampoo and consitioning, colouring using temporary dyes, styling men or women's hair, salon reception duties, health and safety and working with others in the hair and beauty sector.  The purpose of this qualification is to develop the learns' skills in hair and provide them with the foundation for further learning.  It will also help learners to perform their own services and assist others in the salon.  Learners will receive training for this qualification in a modern and well equipped salon located on the premises of St Thomas's Network.  Learners will initially practice on blocks and friends and family until the assessor feels they are ready to go into a real work place and work with commercial clients.  Once placed with an employer, the learner will receive visits from their assessor to ensure subject knowledge, competency and understanding are being followed throughout and to provide additional support.

For summative assesment of candidates must undertake a consultation on a friend or family member (non commercial client) ongoing practical assessments, observations, portfolios, discussions and demonstrations.

Examination/Assessment - this will be done via online/paper assessment tests.  Continual assessments are done as learns complete each unit.  Practical assessments take place either in College or on work placement.

Learners can if required apply to the Bursary Fund for financial assistance towards the costs of the course.
