Course description

Grade B in GCSE Biology (as a separate science) or BB in GCSE dual award Science
(Core and Additional). You will also need a minimum of a grade C in GCSE Mathematics.

Course content

Are you interested in how the cellular nature of life relates to the living processes common to all organisms? Do you want to understand why some organisms need special adaptations in order to exchange materials with their environment and others don’t? Ever wondered what controls embryonic cells to specialise into bone, muscle and nerves? If so, then choose Biology.

Entry requirements

Grade B in GCSE Biology (as a separate science) or BB in GCSE dual award Science
(Core and Additional). You will also need a minimum of a grade C in GCSE Mathematics.

Assessment

AS:
Examination – Paper 1 (Breadth in Biology) AS (50%) 1.5 hours
Examination – Paper 2 (Depth in Biology) AS (50%) 1.5 hours

A Level: 
Examination – Paper 1 (Biological Processes) A Level (37%) 2.25 hours
Examination – Paper 2 (Biological Diversity) A Level (37%) 2.25 hours
Examination – Paper 3 (Unified Biology) A Level (26%) 1.30 hours

Assessment is via external examination following the OCR specification.

Future opportunities

A wide range of careers are opened up to students who study A-level Biology including Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Nursing, Midwifery and Pharmacy.
