Media Studies A Level at New Mills School and Sixth Form

Course description

We live in an interconnected age. 24-hour media coverage is unavoidable; wireless Internet coverage is accessed through smartphones in our pockets. From teenagers to grandparents we have all been a pan of the digital revolution and the media in some way influences all of us, consciously or sub-consciously.

With the BBC bringing over 7000 jobs to Manchester through the development of their 'Media City' complex at Salford Quays there has never been a better time to develop skills in one of the few economic sectors that maintained growth through the difficult economic times we have experienced. Britain is becoming a hotbed for film production, Wamer Brothers have invested millions in their studios at Pinewood and the new Star Wars movies are being shot here in the UK. As the 21st Century progresses it has never been more essential that individuals understand the power and influence of the media around them.

Course content

A-Level Media Studies tackles a diverse range of the texts and industries that surround us and affect us. We look at significant feature films, documentaries and TV shows and learn to consider how global events shape the content of the entertainment we consume. We examine advertising, news journalism, the music industry and more, considering the cultural, historical, economic and political influences upon them.

The Media Studies Department is also proud to be one of very few Sixth Forms' able to allow students to work individual on industry standard software such as Final Cut and Photoshop, as well as having access to a range of high spec AVCHD studio cameras. Students develop practical skills in directing, cinematography, sound and editing and many move onto higher education specializing in these areas.
