Textiles A Level at Chilwell School

Course description

In Textiles a variety of fabrics, media and artistic techniques are utilised. You will explore images, artefacts and resources relating to a range of arts, crafts and designs from the past, present and future. This forms an integral part of the investigative and creative process. Your skills will be assessed through practical and critical activities which should reflect your understanding of different styles, genres and traditions. You will be expected to work in one or more areas; constructed and installed textiles, printed and/or dyed fabric and materials, domestic textiles and interior design / fashion.

Entry requirements

Additional entry requirements: Students will need a minimum grade C GCSE Art or Textiles.


The course is assessed by both examination and coursework. You will be required to demonstrate:
  • an awareness of the elements of textile design such as shape, colour, texture, pattern, harmony, contrast and repetition
  • an appreciation of the relationship of form and function and, where applicable, the constraints of working to a brief
  • an understanding of a variety of textile methods, such as fabric printing, tie-dye, batik, spraying, transfer and fabric construction and stitching
