Course description

Choosing A Level Mathematics is a great choice for your future. Mathematics is a very wide subject area and therefore provides a good foundation for careers in many areas. A good A Level in Maths is highly regarded and can increase earning power by up to 10%. Researchers have found that: 'People with Maths A Level go on to earn significantly more than their peers with equivalent qualifications'. Studying A Level Maths can help you with your studies in other A Level subjects. The mechanics module links to Physics, the statistics module links to research methods for many Social Sciences. You will also develop skills in reasoning logically and solving problems.

Students attend four hours of lessons a week and are expected to take an increasing responsibility for their own learning by completing at least four hours of additional work per week. Work must be handed in regularly and regular feedback is made on progress. Students who choose A Level Maths are taught by experienced and enthusiastic teaching staff who are committed to supporting students both in and out of lessons in order to achieve success.

Students choosing to study Mathematics will furnish themselves with a good base for many careers involving Science, Engineering, Finance, Business and Education. It is a rigorous and challenging subject demanding hard work and determination and is recognised not only as a highly valuable qualification but also a good indicator of excellent academic ability.

Entry requirements

In order to follow a level three course you must have at least five GCSE passes at A* - C or equivalent.

To study this course you must have:

  • grade C GCSE English Language
  • grade B GCSE Mathematics on the Higher Tier paper
  • plus at least 3 other subjects at GCSE.

Assessment

A series of six modules are studied, three in year 12 and three in year 13.

AS: Pure Core 1, Pure Core 2, Statistics 1 (all in June)

A2: Pure Core 3, Pure Core 4, Mechanics 1 (all in June)

No coursework is involved.

Sixth Form Bursary

The 16-19 Bursary Fund is available at Brooksbank School to help support those young people who face the greatest barriers in continuing their education to Post-16. All applications are welcome and must meet certain eligibility criteria, details of which can be found on the main school website.

Future opportunities

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses which could lead onto higher education in areas of Mathematics or related areas such as Engineering, Economics, Physics or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Mathematics such as an Accountant, Engineer, Financial Adviser or Teacher. However, if you are thinking of entering the job market, the many skills gained whilst studying this course are highly regarded by most employers.
