Geography A Level at Wyke Sixth Form College

Course description

This is a great course for anyone interested in people and places. The qualification combines well with other subjects and is well recognised as a preparation for study at higher education. Students are expected to have a good range of GCSEs along with a Geography or Humanities qualification and a good level of English. The ability to ‘think like a geographer’ is promoted throughout the course where students will learn to develop and apply their critical thinking skills. Students will be able to develop their skills with fieldwork opportunities.

Course content

Component 1 – Physical Geography

- Water and carbon cycles

- Coastal systems and landscapes

- Hazards

This component of the course is assessed by an examination worth 40% of the A Level.

 

Component 2 – Human Geography

- Global systems and global governance

- Changing places

- Population and the environment

This component of the course is assessed by an examination worth 40% of the A Level.

 

Component 3Geographical Investigation

You will complete an individual investigation which must include data collected in the field. The individual investigation will be based on a question defined and developed relating to part of the specification content. The student will produce a 3,000 - 4,000 word report.

This component is assessed by a report worth 20% of the A Level.

Assessment

20% Coursework, 80% Examination
