Media Studies at Oaklands Catholic School

Course description

This course will enable students to:

  • To interact with, understand and enjoy the media.
  • To develop a critical understanding of a wide range of media texts.
  • To work independently to produce high quality moving image, print and  e-media work.

Course content

The course will be a creative mix of the practical and academic. Media students undertake practical production work at AS and A2, making film, TV, print and e-media work You also need to write, blog and present your work academically.


Entry requirements

  • A minimum of 5 A*-C grades at GCSE including English and Maths.
  • GCSE grade C in English, Media or other related Creative Art is essential.


Unit 1 AS (Yr12) 50% AS-

Investigating Media

  • Section A - Four compulsory short answer questions based on one unseen piece of stimulus material (from moving image, emedia or print). Students analyse one unseen text such as TV, website or magazine.
  • Section B - One essay question from a choice of two (based on a crossmedia case study completed by the student).
  • Assessment: 1½ hour written paper.

Unit 2 AS (Yr12) - 50% AS

Creating Media

  • Two linked production pieces (taken from two of the three media platforms studied in Unit 1). Currently, these pieces can be film, trailers or music promotion work.
  • Assessment: Internally examined and Externally Moderated.

Unit 3 A2 (Yr13) - 50% A2

Critical Perspectives

  • Section A - Three compulsory questions on unseen stimulus materials. Students analyse two media texts such as TV, film, magazine.
  • Section B - One essay from a choice of two pre-set topics.
  • Assessment:1½ hour written paper.

Unit 4 A2 (Yr13) - 50% A2

Media: Research and Production

  • 2000 word project into any media area of student’s choice.
  • Practical project such as film or website.
  • Assessment: Internally examined and Externally Moderated.

Future opportunities

Media is a stimulating subject which helps to develop both practical media skills and your power of analysis. t is useful to access further study in any other arts subjects. Universities often like the independent working skills of media students.

Relevant to those wishing to pursue a course in the media, advertising, publishing or the arts, media in broadcast and e-media platforms, i.e. generally a very powerful industry which is rapidly growing.
