Motor Vehicle Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3 at PETROC

Course description

This qualification is designed to further increase knowledge and opportunities for individuals and apprentices who have completed a Level 2 Diploma vehicle technician programme.

Course content

The majority of the programme is based upon vehicle electrical/electronic systems such as engine management, electronic chassis systems, transmission systems and auxiliary circuits.

Hybrid and high voltage vehicle technology is also covered, as is climate control and air conditioning. 


Entry requirements

You must be employed in the relevant industry. Successful completion of the Level 2 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance. GCSE grade C or above in Maths, English or ICT would be an advantage. Assessment of the students prior knowledge and experience at interview will determine entry onto the course.


The programme has ongoing assessment using on-line testing, written assignments and practical tasks where students are expected to diagnose complex system faults and make recommendations for repair.

Assessment is carried out in college by practical workshop tasks demonstrating diagnostic techniques, on line tests, and written assignments. You will also be assessed at your workplace completing live diagnostic jobs.

Future opportunities

This qualification could lead on to a motor vehicle management programme, or further specialist technical courses.
