Course description

  • Achieving the Access Diploma is not based upon passing examinations and the course is assessed through a variety of assignments, including exams, essays, presentations and reports. 
  • The course benefits from a range of interesting topic areas taught by well qualified, supportive and enthusiastic staff. In addition to these, separate lessons are timetabled to build the core skills of communication, numeracy and ICT up to the required standard for university entry.
  • Support, guidance and regular feedback provided in personal tutorials to encourage and motivate students who may initially lack confidence in the classroom. Excellent opportunities to progress in the Health Care sector.

Course content

Access courses are aimed at mature students wishing to prepare for higher education. They offer a second chance to students with few formal qualifications or to students wishing to change career direction. This course covers Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Health, Law, Medical Ethics, Sociology and Psychology. There are also core skills in Numeracy, Communications and Information Technology.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry qualifications but applicants will need to show that their Maths, Science and English skills are currently at Level 2 and must produce certificates/evidence to support this. All applicants will be subject to interview.

Assessment

Each module will be assessed through a combination of assignments, seminars, presentations, tests, formal essay work and group discussion.

Future opportunities

Students who successfully complete the course would be eligible to apply for Degree or HND courses in a related subject area, with a view to a career in Nursing, Midwifery and allied Health professions.
