Critical Thinking AS at Northampton School for Girls

Course description

Critical Thinking centres on the ability to analyse, evaluate and respond to arguments. There is an emphasis on high level thinking skills and the application of logic.

Course content

You will:·       read a range of argumentative texts·       learn to apply a framework of criteria to the structure and validity of each argument·       engage in discussion with other students·       learn how to write a coherent and analytical response to the arguments of others.

Entry requirements

No specific qualifications are required for this course other than the usual post-16 entry requirements for AS level study. A high grade in History, Sociology or Religious Studies would suggest an affinity for the type of thinking skills required for the course.

Unit 1 - multiple choice questions & two passages with structured questionsUnit 2 - One essay ty[e question on credibility, & two essay-type questions on evaluating arguments

Future opportunities

Critical Thinking is an ideal tool for supporting almost any Higher Education course or profession. A logical mathematician would benefit from the verbal skills acquired. It is the basis of any philosophical or theoretical course.A student going into Law would find her argumentative skills honed.
