Mathematics A Level at Kesteven and Sleaford High School Selective Academy

Course description

Students work towards the OCR Qualification. Both AS and A2 Mathematics consists of 3 modules each. Two
modules in each year must be Core Mathematics; the third module must be an applied module, usually
Statistics in year 12 and Decision in year 13.
Core Mathematics covers topics such as algebra, trigonometry, calculus, graph work and vectors. The first
Core examination is non-calculator.
The Statistics module develops ideas already introduced at GCSE such as histograms, probability and
averages. This is extended into new areas such as probability distributions, correlation, regression,
permutations and combinations.
The Decision module studies algorithms (step-by-step methods) for solving problems. These problems are
real life situations such as the shortest route between two points, minimum cost or maximum profit which could
be achieved.
