Art and Design: Textile Art A Level at Birkenhead Sixth Form College
Would you like to explore and experiment with a range of textiles, media and techniques? How can patterns, motifs, colour and textures be developed into fashion and textile designs? How do other artists and designers produce and get inspiration for their work?
You will be given the space to be creative in our School of Art & Design that offers students a professional, modern environment with its five large teaching studios.
You will take part in a number of taught workshops to improve and expand your use of textiles media and techniques. You will also develop your drawing and observation skills. You will complete projects where you will design and make a final work for assessment.
Working to a Brief
You will research and work to an externally provided brief. You will collect observations, experiment with media and techniques, develop ideas and create a final product within a timed period.
You will work on extended personal projects within a broad given theme to produce an initial studies essay, an experimentation, development work and a final piece.
Working to a Brief
You will work from an externally provided starting point to produce critical studies, observation, experimentation, development work and a final piece within a given time period.
You must have achieved at least 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including a C grade in English and at least a C in GCSE Art and Design (Fine Art, Unendorsed or Textiles. Design Technology may also be considered, however, an interview with the Head of Department is necessary.) Students without these requirements who nevertheless have career ambitions requiring AS Fine Art will be interviewed by the Head of Department to establish whether progression on this course is possible.
You will be assessed through a mixture of coursework (60%) and exam projects (40%) which you will complete in the studio within a fixed time period. Guidance and support will also be provided to ensure that you develop the analysis and written skills required to undertake these tasks.
You will develop creative, analytical and evaluation skills necessary for success in a broad range of design careers. Many students progress into Higher Education in a wide variety of Fine Art fields and disciplines. You can either apply to study a higher level qualification direct from college or, more often, complete a one year Art, Design and Media Foundation Diploma which will help you to decide which specialist qualification to apply for. You can complete the Art, Design and Media Foundation Diploma here at Birkenhead Sixth Form College.
