Mathematics and Further Mathematics A Level at Hertswood Academy

Course description

Further M athematics gives the most able mathematicians the opportunity to both study some new topics that are not in either GCSE or normal A - level M athematics (such as so called ‘imaginary numbers’ – the square roots of ne gative numbers) and to study some A level topics in more depth. It is invaluable for anyone wishing to study a mathematics based subject at University. This is the first time we have offered Mathematics and Further Mat hematics as a “Double” subject. This takes two option blocks, has a total of 11 lessons a week and at the end you get two A levels. All your maths lessons will be in your further maths class, meaning we can really accelerate the teaching and stretch and challenge the most able students . You w ill cover most of A Level Mathematics in year 12, while year 13 will be spent mostly doing Further Mathematics.

Entry requirements

This course is aimed at the most able mathematicians. You will need at least a grade 8 at GCSE mathema tics , or an A at GCSE further Mathematics. Further M athematics GCSE would be an advantage but it is not essential.
