Mathematics and Further Mathematics A Level at Hertswood Academy
Further M athematics gives the most able mathematicians the opportunity to both study some new topics that are not in either GCSE or normal A - level M athematics (such as so called ‘imaginary numbers’ – the square roots of ne gative numbers) and to study some A level topics in more depth. It is invaluable for anyone wishing to study a mathematics based subject at University. This is the first time we have offered Mathematics and Further Mat hematics as a “Double” subject. This takes two option blocks, has a total of 11 lessons a week and at the end you get two A levels. All your maths lessons will be in your further maths class, meaning we can really accelerate the teaching and stretch and challenge the most able students . You w ill cover most of A Level Mathematics in year 12, while year 13 will be spent mostly doing Further Mathematics.
This course is aimed at the most able mathematicians. You will need at least a grade 8 at GCSE mathema tics , or an A at GCSE further Mathematics. Further M athematics GCSE would be an advantage but it is not essential.
