Painting and Decorating Level 1 Extended Certificate at Carlisle College

Course description

This qualification focuses on fundamental practical skills and knowledge. Successful completion of the qualification will ensure that the learner will have gained an understanding of the core skills and knowledge required for working within the sector. The qualification does not require occupational evidence. Satisfactory completion of studies will lead to the Level 1 extended certificate in construction skills – Paint & Decorating Pathway.

Course content

Introduction to health and safety in construction
Introduction to the construction industry
Painting techniques
Painting and wallpapering
Applying decorative effects
Applying wallpaper to internal and external angles and painting skirting
Painting a panel door
Maths and English at an appropriate level

Entry requirements

GCSEs at grades E – F
Or Entry Level Qualification
Or Scottish equivalent

At least 16 years old with an interest in the industry. Subject to an initial assessment and interview.


On-going assessment will take place throughout the course. All assessments within this qualification are externally set (by City and Guilds), centre marked assignments and practical assessments.

Future opportunities

You may be able to progress to the level 2 diploma or an apprenticeship, if you gain employment as a painter and decorator.

Further information

As part of your programme of study, there is an expectation that you undertake a timetabled work placement or experience block of learning, this is designed to enable you to gain experience of the industry. You will also have the opportunity to complete additional modules from our construction skills portfolio, Including: Electrical, Plumbing, Brickwork, Joinery and Plastering, This will allow you to gain a wider experience of the industry and increase you skills.
