Course description

There is a significant demand across the country for skilled and qualified Heavy Goods Vehicle technicians. Employers need committed, well trained and enthusiastic workers. By undertaking this course you will in gain the knowledge and skills needed to be a valuable team member.

Completing and achieving this course will demonstrate to employers that you have gained the right knowledge and experience to help them in their business and encourage them to invest in you and your career.

The course provides vocationally related knowledge and skills which will improve employability within these vocations. Successful completion of units or the full award can contribute to the achievement of a VCQ when you have gained employment in a Heavy vehicle workplace.

Course content

What will I do on this course?

You will study health, safety and good housekeeping in a workshop environment.

Practical work will include, materials, fabrication, tools and measuring devices, routine heavy vehicle maintenance, removing and replacing engine units, electrical units, chassis units, driveline units, transmission units, steering and suspension units, fuel, ignition, air and exhaust system units and their components.

You will also conduct inspection of vehicles using prescribed methods. You will undertake practical tasks in the workshop and theory work in the classroom over a 36 week period. You will also undertake work experience with an employer.

Entry requirements

16-18 years, 4 GCSEs at Grade 3 (D in the old grading structure) including maths and/or English minimum (or equivalent)
