Mathematics GCSE at Kearsley Academy
Course Content: This qualification in Mathematics encourages students to develop confidence in and a positive attitude towards, mathematics and to recognise the importance of mathematics in their own lives and to society. It prepares students to make informed decisions about; the use of technology, the management of money, further learning opportunities and career choices. Problem solving is at the heart of the subject. This course requires students to: Develop knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts. Use their knowledge and understanding to make connections between mathematical concepts. Develop confident and versatile problem solving skills. Apply the functional elements of mathematics in everyday and real-life situations. Assessment: Externally assessed by Edexcel in either November or June (or both). Two 1 hour 45 minute wriiten papers (calculator and non-calculator paper), each contributing to 50% of the final grade. There are two tiers of paper with the following grades available: Higher Tier; A*, A, B, C, and D Foundation Tier; C, D, E, F and G The functional elements of Mathematics are assessed on each paper: Higher Tier, 20-30% Foundation Tier, 30-40%
Application of Mathematics is essential for everyday life. Anyone who is contemplating a career in Science, Business ot Technology must be able to handle mathematics with ease. Employers know that students who do well in Mathematics will have developed problem solving skills and will have steep learning curves.
