A-Level (AS/A2) in Mathematics at Archbishop Holgate's School

Course description

This is a highly regarded subject which complements all other subjects.

Course content

AS Mathematics modules are based upon two Core Mathematics including topics such as algebra, co-ordinate geometry, polynomials, binomial theorem, trigonometry and calculus and a Statistics module, involving Data Handling and Probability.

A2 Mathematics will consist of two more Core modules and one module in Mechanics. The Core modules include topics such as further differentiation and integration, partial fractions, vectors and further trigonometry. The Mechanics course looks at forces, motion and friction.

You will need to be committed and willing to spend approximately four hours per week of your own time, practising examples and solving problems. You will need to be well organised, hard working, logical and determined, and be able to work independently.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for Sixth Form are 5 A*- C at GCSE, including English and Mathematics, although certain courses will have specific requirements.

If you study this course we would advise that students should attain at least a B in Maths on a higher paper in order to succeed.

Assessment

Each module is assessed by an external written exam - there is no coursework. Some modules will be taken in the January session; the other modules are taken in June.

Financial information

Over the duration of this course students may be required to attend visits to further their learning. If there are any cost implications student will be notified in advance and financial support may be offered to students who would have difficulty funding such visits.

Future opportunities

Many students go on to pursue careers in areas such as medicine, research and development, engineering, statistics, operational research, computing, accountancy, actuarial work, business management, insurance, financial services and teaching.

Further information

You will have the opportunity to attend business placements and work with a local company to solve real maths problems. Enthusiastic and talented students will be given the opportunity to take part in the National Mathematics Challenge at Senior level.
