BTEC First Diploma in Children's Care, Learning & Development at Bournville College
Course description
It is a level two qualification, which provides a basic knowledge and understanding of child care and education.
Course content
You will study six units:
Understanding children’s development
Keeping children safe
Communication with children and adults
Preparing and maintaining environments for child care
Professional development, roles and responsibilities in child care
Children’s Learning Activities and Play
The course offers students a good balance between College based study and work placement.
Throughout the course you will attend a work placement for two days per week, usually in either a primary school or nursery setting. Whilst in placement you will build up a portfolio of evidence of your experiences. This portfolio will include child observations, activity plans and evaluations, supervisor reports and reports of tutor visits.
Entry requirements
In order to gain a place on this course you will need either: 4 GCSE’s at Grade D or above in academic subjects, including English and maths or A relevant Level 1 qualification with evidence of achievement at Merit or Distinction. Potential students will also be interviewed to assess their suitability for a career in childcare. A clear DBS check will be needed (this will be processed during enrolment).
Assessment
For the duration of your course you will spend two days each week in work placement. Over the year you will gain experience in three different settings and age ranges. Whilst in placement you will build a portfolio of evidence which will include reflections on your experiences, child observations, activity plans, supervisor reports and reports of tutor visits.
Each unit is assessed by a variety of assignment tasks, both written and practical.
Each unit will be graded PASS, MERIT or DISTINCTION.
In order to gain the full qualification all units must be successfully completed.
Future opportunities
Successful completion of the course can enable individuals to gain employment as a nursery assistant/support worker or, dependent on grades achieved, can enable progression on to a level three qualification.
