Craft Catering City and Guilds Level 2 Diploma at South Downs College

Course description

This is a recognised qualification for all those wishing to take up a career in the Hospitality and  Catering Industry as either a chef or a career in food and beverage service and forms the second year of a full time program of study.

You must also have ambition, drive and a commitment to succeed in a very competitive industry.

Learning will be provided by lectures, workshops, team teaching, demonstration with an emphasis on the realistic working environment and work based testimonial.

Course content

Students will be provided with theoretical and practical skills needed to complete the course:

  • City and Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Professional Cookery (7100-12)
  • City and Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Food & Beverage Service (7103-06)
  • Food Hygiene and Nutrition
  • Health & Safety
  • Commodities and Sourcing of Ingredients

As the programme provides specialist skill based qualifications in such areas as Kitchen and Restaurant, the course is predominately practical in its aspect.


Entry requirements

Applicants should already have NVQ1, VRQ1 or equivalent in skill based areas (Kitchen and Restaurant) and have a desire to enter the Catering Industry at a higher level.

You should have achieved a good record of achievement and have good references and have already shown  a commitment for your chosen profession.

At interview you will be expected show an understanding of the catering industry and a strong commitment to the course.



The assessment for the VRQs in Professional Cookery and Food & Beverage Service will be by practical test, assignment and theory tests; these will be set at regular intervals during the year.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of this course, you can progress onto a Level 3 course in either, Kitchen/ larder, Patisserie studies or Level 3 NVQ in Restaurant Supervision to further enhance your skills, knowledge and employability or you may seek an employment in the Hospitality and Catering industry.

Further information

Students will be involved in the Vocational Realistic Working environments in the Kitchen and Restaurants. This will involve planned evening activities as well as other functions.

As part of the programme students will be involved in visits and a two week work placement within the Catering Industry as part of the ‘Catering for their Future’ programme.

Students are encouraged to undertake part-time employment in an appropriate position in addition to their course. The College will help with finding jobs within the industry.

The College has links with major Hospitality and Catering Organisations including the Royal Household, the D&D restaurant Group, Solent Hotel and local Michelin Restaurants.

Students enrolled on Hospitality and Catering courses will have the opportunity to join our ‘Catering for their Future’ scheme, which will provide work experience and career development from over 40 employers.
