Sport (Performance & Excellence) BTEC Level 3 at Priestley College

Course description

This qualification is intended as a Tech Level qualification, equivalent in size to two A Levels. It has been designed as part of a two-year programme, with two specialist pathways: Fitness Services, and Sports Performance and Coaching. They will run in conjunction with one or more industry based qualifications e.g. CYQ Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualification. This qualification is aimed at learners looking to progress to employment in the sport and fitness industry.

Course content

The course contains 10 units of which 7 are mandatory and 2 are externally assessed. You will take one external assessment per year of the course. The pathways you can follow are as follows:

  • Core Diploma Units Anatomy and Physiology Fitness Training and Programming Professional Development in Sport Work Experience

Fitness Pathway

  • Fitness Testing
  • Self-employment in fitness Intrusting gym-based exercise Exercise & circuit based activity Exercise to music

Performance and coaching Sports Leadership

  • Sports Psychology
  • Coaching for Performance Performance analysis
  • Fitness Testing

Entry requirements

You need to be highly enthusiastic and motivated to work towards a career in your chosen area. Both courses will require you to work with groups from different areas of the community and we work experience will be a key skill. You will complete lots of practical during the course in which you will be expected to take part.


  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Fitness Training and Programming.

During the other units your tutors will set assignments for you to complete. A range of assessment methods will be used, such as practical observations and testing, presentations, timed assignments and interviews. The emphasis of the assessment will be real-work scenarios to enable you to apply the information in a job role. You will be given grades for each unit of Pass, Merit, Distinction and Distinction* to arrive at an overall grade for this qualification.

Future opportunities

This work-related course is designed to provide you with underpinning skills to gain employment in your chosen industry. Students who complete the Fitness pathway will go onto careers in fitness instruction, personal training, leisure services and group based exercise. The Sports Performance and Coaching pathway is designed to lead to careers in coaching, activity leadership, performance analysis and sports psychology. Students may also opt to follow an apprenticeship route after the course.

Further information

Throughout the course you will have the opportunity to undertake a variety of specialised study visits, guest speakers, residential experiences and a range of practical activities, to compliment your programme of study. We also encourage students to gain work-based and volunteering experience in the local community.
