Art and Design: Fine Art A level at Abbey College, Ramsey
The course aims to develop intellectual, imaginative and creative powers. Skills are explored through a wide range of media in order to develop analysis, expression and aesthetic understanding. The roles of artists, crafts people and designers are investigated and related to students' own ideas and artwork solutions.
Students will follow the Fine Art endorsement, which encourages a broad approach to both 2 and 3 dimensional media. All practical and theoretical work will be contextually based within the History of Art and Design. In close relation to this, students will make museum and gallery visits to engage with artworks at first hand.
A minimum grade C is expected at GCSE Art and a good coursework and homework record.
Students will need to purchase a range of art materials/equipment for home-use and sketch pads/flip folders for each component. Art visits to London and Cambridge are an important part of the course.
Many students progress on to the one year Art Foundation course at the College of West Anglia, Wisbech, Cambridge Regional College, Huntingdon Regional College or Peterborough Regional College. From there they go on to a wide variety of degree courses eg Graphics, Fashion, Surface pattern, 3D Design, Spatial Design, Fine Art, Photography, Illustration etc.
A PGCE year, following a degree would enable students to teach/lecture Art. Alternatively, can combine Art with other subjects to enter creative industries, such as journalism, advertising, publishing, architecture, museum and gallery work, performing arts, film, video, television, digital media etc.
