Media Studies AS Level at Wheatley Park School

Course description

Media Studies is a fun, exciting and dynamic course offering A Level students the opportunity to explore the industries of film, TV, magazines, newspapers, the internet, radio and beyond! A Level Media Studies is easily accessible for students new to Media Studies. The course entails studying the vast media industries – investigating how they work, how and why media texts are produced and how audiences relate and respond to media texts. Students then take this knowledge and understanding into their own media production work.

Course content

Paper 1 (70% of AS Level)

Students will respond to issues and debates raised in the media. They will show their understanding of the theoretical framework and the media products they have engaged with.

How it is assessed - An unseen source.

  • Multiple choice questions testing breadth of knowledge.
  • Short answer questions testing knowledge in depth.
  • An extended response question.


Practical Application of Learning (30%)

Using practical skills relating to the media format of their choice and related to the over arching, annually changing theme, students produce a statement of intent and  a media

Entry requirements

The basic entry requirement for Level 3 courses in Wheatley Park Sixth Form is to complete 8 GCSEs or equivalent, including a minimum of grade 4 in five subjects which must include English and Mathematics.
