Philosophy AS/A Level at Prendergast - Hilly Fields College
AS and A Level courses based on this specification should encourage candidates to: - gain knowledge and understanding of Philosophy through consideration of some important philosophical issues and approaches to problems; - develop a rigorous approach, both critical and constructive, to the study of Philosophy and the nature of argument; - develop a set of transferable intellectual skills – including comprehension, interpretation, analysis and evaluation – which will facilitate the development of independent thinking, based on critical examination of evidence and rational argumentation, and which will be applicable in the study of other academic subjects and in reflection on other important aspects of human experience; practise and enhance the ability to construct, develop and maintain clear and coherent argument. Philosophy AS Level: 3 units: Theory of Knowledge, Moral Philosophy and a text based study. Philosophy A2 Level: 3 units: Philosophy of Mind, a Text based study and a Synoptic Study.
A*-B GCSE English Language and Mathematics or Science and a minimum of 5 A-C GCSE grades. Grade C at AS level.
You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Philosophy, which could lead onto higher education in Philosophy, the Social Sciences, Religious Studies or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Philosophy, People or Religion by working in Human Relations, Research or Teaching. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for
