Apprenticeships are employment-led programmes designed for young people aged 16-24. An Advanced Apprenticeship in Accountancy is likely to have a role title such as Accounts Supervisor, Accounts Assistant, Purchase Ledger Clerk or Finance Assistant. As part of your Advanced Apprenticeship you will come to the College for off the job training to develop your practical skills and to learn the underpinning knowledge.

Course content

The Apprenticeship framework is made up of the Level 3 Diploma in Accounting awarded by the AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians), plus two Functional Skills in English and Mathematics.

This Level 3 qualification includes accounting units:
- Accounts Preparation 1 & 2
- Spreadsheets
- Indirect Taxation
- Cash Management
- Professional Ethics (if not already achieved)
- Cost and Revenues

Entry requirements

- Working in an accounting environment
- GCSEs to include Maths at A* to C and English at Grade D or above
- Level 2 Certificate in Accounting or equivalent

You will primarily be assessed by online examination and projects set by the AAT. Functional Skills are assessed by an externally set test.

Your progress on the programme will be reviewed a minimum of every 10-12 weeks. This is normally done in your workplace. Targets will be set that reflect your individual needs.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of the framework, facilities are in place to progress to the Higher Apprenticeship in Accountancy at Level 4, all leading to potential chartered accountancy status.

Previous apprentices have secured employment with a wide range of organisations including the local councils, manufacturing and service businesses, and accounting practices.
