Art at Harwich and Dovercourt High School
At the start of the AS year students will experience a ‘Foundation Project’. This will give them time to experience a range of different techniques and materials. Students will then be required to produce a coursework portfolio which will run through to February: this will be based on the theme ‘A Sense of Space’. There is an opportunity to express themselves in a range of media: printmaking, photography, ceramics, 3D and paint.
In February students will start work on one chosen exam question and have 6 weeks of lessons to prepare for their five-hour exam.
A2 starts with a ‘Personal Investigation’ project, which is a coursework module. This will run from September to February and in the A2 this module demands greater independence. Students are required to complete a 2000-word essay which should be inspired by the theme of their Personal Investigation project.
A level students also complete a Controlled Assignment. Students are expected to spend 6 weeks preparing for their exam, using one exam question as inspiration. In the exam, which is 15 hours long, students will produce a sustained piece of work. At the end of the year students from both years will get a chance to exhibit their work to celebrate what they have created and achieved throughout the year. Teachers, governors and parents are invited to this evening.
Students must have grade C in GCSE Art.
