English Language and Literature at Drayton Manor High School

Course description

Focusing on language in use, students study prose, poetry and drama, with opportunities for personal study of language and the option to write an original short story. This course offers the opportunity to develop as independent, confident and reflective readers and writers, and to explore the myriad ways that people manipulate language to express themselves. Students will also have the opportunity to study practical linguistic subjects such as ‘theories of conversation’ which involves analysing transcripts of actual speech.

Future opportunities

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in English Language and Literature, which could lead onto higher education in English Language and Literature Studies or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to English Language and Literature Studies such as a Teacher, Journalist or Author. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
