Sociology KIN at Invictus Sixth Form
Sociology is all around us! It is the critical and theoretical study of society. If you enjoy thinking about relevant, topical, ever-changing current issues then you will love this subject.
Essay writing is an important aspect of the course; analytical and evaluative writing skills will help you succeed as a sociological writer. However, before this, you have to become a sociological thinker…! Engaging with the news media, thinking about politics, criticising the everyday, building an opinion and being able to debate will help you achieve this.
We focus on the important issue of power when we explore the structures and systems of society, particularly examining how power is achieved, maintained and used. Theories such as Feminism and Marxism are tools to help us do this.
Politics is at the heart of many of our discussions.
Sociology really will change the way you see, think and talk about the world!
We study society and the whole world around us! Our individual units include:
• Families and households
• Research Methods
• The Media
• Crime and Deviance
• Sociological Theory
Specific entry requirements:
At least a grade 6 in GCSE English Language or GCSE English Literature
Assessment: 100% examination at AS and A Level
• As well as degree level Sociology, this subject compliments so many other disciplines which you may be interested in studying at university: particularly Politics, Law, Psychology, English, Media Studies, Geography and History.
• Because Sociology is based on the analytical study of groups of people, it is useful for a wide range of careers, from law to social work, nursing, policing, teaching and medicine.
