Course description

This Academic Pathway and Legacy Subject - A level mathematics is a course which is highly suitable for those students who have performed well at GCSE level, enjoy the subject and are committed to learning new concepts. Universities look upon mathematics favourably and consider it to be excellent preparation for many courses and future careers.

A 2 Year A-level Course studying Pure Maths 1, Pure Maths 2, Statistics and Mechanics  


Course content

The A level course comprises of two thirds pure mathematics and one third applied mathematics. The applied element covers both Statistics and Mechanics.


Entry requirements

An average of 5- 'Attainment 8' score (largely equivalent to 4 grade 4s and 4 grade 5s) across 8 highest GCSEs including English & a grade 6 in GCSE Maths 


Students must complete all assessments in May/June of Year 13.  There will be three 2 hours written examinations (Pure Mathematics 1; Pure Mathematics 2 and Statistics & Mechanics).  The applied paper will be divided into two sections; section A covering Statistics and section B covering Mechanics.  

Future opportunities

A level Maths is highly regarded by universities and employers.  Students who study A-level Maths may go on to study degree courses in Mathematics, Economics, Accounting, Physics, Business Studies, Computer Sciences and Mechanical Engineering, to name just a few.  Potential career opportunities are extremely widespread - from Business and Finance through to Therapy Professionals!
