Media BTEC Level 1 at Shipley College

Course description

This course introduces you to the exciting world of media. Learn about creative media, the industry and delivering a quality media product.

Try out different areas such as digital photography, digital graphics & photo-manipulation, 2D animation, TV and video production. You may also go on trips to the National Media Museum to see creative media in action and listen to talks from professionals.

Learn skills which help you with your studies and getting a job, including Personal & Social Development. You can also gain important Functional Skills qualifications in maths, English and ICT.

Course content

As this course is part of the Foundation Learning offer you may study a range of subjects as well as Media.

You will also try out different areas of digital media production. This will give you a taste of the industry and provide you with options for the future.

The course is made up of various units, these include:

  • Animation
  • Creating & Editing Audio
  • Digital Image Production
  • Digital Photography
  • Investigating Multimedia Products
  • Using Website Software
  • Video Production & Editing

You will also take part in a group project and study Functional Skills in English, maths and ICT. Functional skills help to make students more employable and improve CVs or personal statements.

Entry requirements

  • 2 GCSEs at grade E (2) or above in both English & maths.
  • We will do an assessment to find out which course level is right for you.
  • You need a positive attitude and a keen interest in media.
  • You will also come to an introductory ‘taster’ session before the course starts, to see if it is the right course for you


There are no exams on this course, as all the work is portfolio-based and practical (e.g. creating a video or interactive game). However, you may need to take some short tests for Functional Skills in English, maths and ICT.

Financial information

Most students will not have to pay tuition fees. You will need a small amount of money for recommend textbooks and study materials. You may also need to contribute some money towards the cost of trips to museums and industry shows.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of the course, you may move on to the Creative Digital Media Production BTEC Level 2 which includes learning about working in the games industry, or other Level 2 courses such as Art & Design, Business, Computing or an apprenticeship. Alternatively you could go in to employment as a runner within a TV production or a radio station.
