BTEC Level 3 in Applied Science at Bitterne Park School

Course description

The first year makes up the Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Applied Science which is the equivalent of an AS. The mandatory units are Fundamentals of Science, Working in the Science Industry and Scientific Practical techniques.

The second year of the course consists of 3 units to achieve the Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science (Medical Science). It is made up of units such as Physiology of Human Body Systems, Biochemistry and Biochemical Techniques and Diseases and Infections.

This course is assessed entirely by assignments, there are no exams. Each unit consists of 4 assignments and is approximately 60 hours of study. Assignments are set by your teachers and include laboratory practical tasks, reports, presentations and posters/leaflets.

Why this course?

Students will learn to appreciate how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs grade C or above, including English, Maths and:

• GCSE Biology and either GCSE Chemistry or GCSE Physics – both grade C or above

• GCSE Core and Additional Science – both grade C or above

• BTEC Diploma Applied Science – pass or above

For students with C pass Science grades, a letter of recommendation from their KS4 Science teacher is required. Good organisational skills and the ability to work independently are essential.
