Animal Care Diploma Level 2 at Boston College

Course description

This course is aimed at anyone who is interested in animal care and husbandry. You will complete both practical and theory based units such as animal biology, animal behaviour and handling and health and welfare.

Course content

During your time on the course you will undertake work related experience in the land-based industries, maintain animal accommodation, undertake practical animal feeding, maintain animal health and welfare as well as optional units such as animal biology, behaviour and handling and horse care. 

You will also be expected to carry out work experience during your time on the course. 

In addition to your course, you will also study either Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths, dependent on your current GCSE grade. 

Educational trips are planned throughout the year, alongside guest speakers.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs grades at D or above (New GCSE grade - 3 or above) including English and Maths (or equivalent). You can also progress on to this course from the Animal Care Diploma Level 1. 

If you are unsure about meeting the entry requirements an alternative course would be the Animal Care Diploma Level 1.


This course is 40% practical and 60% theory. 

You will be assessed by group work, course work and presentations.

Financial information

You will be expected to purchase equipment approx. £20 which will include everything you need for practical lessons. 

There are a number of educational visits arranged which you are encouraged to attend at a minimal cost, usually around £20.00. 

Future opportunities

On completion of the course you can progress to Animal Management Diploma Level 3, coming to Boston College in 2016 or straight into employment.
