Course description

This course is ideal for motivated people wishing to pursue a career in Hairdressing. It will give you a recognised foundation qualification and develop both the practical and knowledge skills required for further learning at Level 2.

This programme offers an exciting range of additional activities including visits to trade exhibitions and the opportunity to undertake specialist training on demand.

Course content

What you will study

The course will cover Beauty Therapy services in theory and practice and will include:

• Create and image based on a theme
• Working in the Hair and Beauty Industries
• Follow Health & Safety Practice in the Salon
• Client and customer skills
• Create and maintain a retail display area in the salon
• Promote yourself and prepare for a job interview
• Promote and sell products and services to clients
• Blow dry and finish hair
• Basic winding techniques
• Shampoo and treat hair
• Basic plating and twisting hair
• Colour hair using semi-permanent colour
• Basic clipper cutting techniques for men’s hair
• Basic clipper cutting techniques for woman’s hair

As a full-time student you will be expected to work towards appropriate Functional Skills or GCSE qualifications in Maths & English.

How you will learn

Hairdressing skills will be demonstrated and practised in the College salons, where you will have the opportunity to bring in your own models or to work on paying clients. The knowledge required to gain certification will be gained in theory lessons and by independent study in the library.

Course Structure

Classroom: 30%; Practical: 70%

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs A*-D or 9-3
Level 1 Hairdressing, plus Level 1 Functional Skills in English and Maths

Assessment tasks are set and marked by College staff.

Financial information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, and residentials, which are payable by all students.

Any student registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and subsequently withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any re-sit examination will incur a cost.

Different fees apply to international/overseas students and those studying this qualification as a standalone course.

Career Opportunities

Students who successfully achieve the Level 2 Foundation skills Diploma can progress to our Level 2 Technical Diploma in Hairdressing.

Further study

Studies, or, subject to obtaining suitable employment in the industry, to the part-time Level 2 NVQ Diploma.

      The Castleford Campus (previously known as the skillsXchange) houses the College’s provision in Construction, Motor Vehicle, Engineering, Hair and Beauty, IT and some Care and replaces the training which was previously offered at the College’s Whitwood Campus.

      Located at Junction 32 of the M62 between Castleford and Pontefract, the site is well known for Xscape, the indoor ski slope whose building houses a 14-screen cinema, bowling alley, climbing wall, sports facilities and restaurants. The Campus is situated directly next to the Asda in Glasshoughton.

      A learning resource centre, equipped with the very latest in technology, is a superb place for individual study, or to relax and use the internet. The Centre overlooks the large external courtyard, where students can mix, mingle and chill.

      In state-of-the-art hair and beauty salons, including a nail bar, we are training the next generation of hairdressers and beauticians. These professional salons offer live training environments to our students, with treatments for both men and women available at affordable prices. There are also industry standard facilities for the study of construction and engineering, motor vehicle and electrical courses.
