Design & Technology: Product Design OCR A Level (Linear) at Poynton High School

Course description

You will have the opportunity to study, propose and realise prototype solutions closely linked to the real world of product manufacture. Students will be expected to create imaginative ideas and solve real design problems in a creative way. Design solutions will be developed, modelled and tested to measure their success. Students will need flair and be able to show innovation when working on concepts and with a range of materials. They should also have an understanding of design development, technological practices and the use and effects of new technologies and modern materials. Thinking skills, financial capability, enterprise and entrepreneurial skills are also part of this qualification.

Course content

Learning Method
The aims of the course are to encourage the achievement of the following designing, communicating and personal skills:
• To develop and sustain your creativity and innovative practice.
• To recognise and overcome challenges and constraints when working towards the production of high-quality products.
• To develop a critical understanding of the influences of the processes and products of design and technological activities from a contemporary and
historical perspective.
• To use ICT to enhance your design and technology capability.
• To draw and apply knowledge, understanding and skills of production processes to a range of design and technology activities.
• To develop an understanding of contemporary design.
• To recognise the values inherent in design and technological activities, and develop critical evaluation skills in technical, aesthetic, ethical, economic, environmental, sustainable, social, cultural and entrepreneurial contexts.
• To draw on a range of skills and knowledge from other subject areas

Entry requirements

  • 5 grade Cs or above at GCSE level, including a C or above in D&T: Product Design, Systems Control, Graphics or Resistant Materials.
  • Students must have achieved a minimum of 50% in their GCSE D&T theory Examination.


  • Product Design Written Examination (2 ½ hrs) 20% of A2 Level
  • Design, Make and Evaluate Coursework (75 hrs) 30% of A2 Level

Design, Make and Evaluate – a coursework portfolio which fully demonstrates your designing, making and evaluating skills, using creativity, flair and innovation. This includes a marketing presentation.

Product Design Examination – this is a written paper consisting of two components.
Component 1 consists of eight product design questions covering different material focus areas. You will answer one of these.
Component 2 assesses your ability to make immediate design thinking responses to a given situation. There will also be eight questions and you will choose to answer one of these.

Future opportunities

The course is particularly suitable for those preparing for courses in architecture, product design, fashion design, ergonomics, engineering, aeronautical and mechanical design, furniture design and teaching design and technology and art and design.
