Biology Level 3 at Cheam High School

Course description

This is an exciting vocational course that is recommended for those students who want to obtain a level 3 qualification in Science but prefer portfolio-based assessment covering a variety of scientific investigations. it is therefore especially suitable for students who achieved a grade C in a Science GCSE.

Course content

Unit 1 – Fundamentals of Science
This is an introductory unit that provides a general understanding of all the main sciences. In this unit you will investigate the quantities necessary in chemical reactions, the structure and functions of cells and the calorific value of different fuels.

Unit 4 – Scientific Practical Techniques
In this unit you will plan and carry out an extended scientific investigation on a topic of your choice. You will be expected to plan, carry out and analyse the results of your experiment and present it as a scientific report.
 
Unit 11 – Physiology of Human Body Systems
In this unit you will learn about the structure and function of the cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive and lymphatic system.

Unit 12 – Physiology of Human Regulation andReproduction
In this unit you will learn how the body fluids are regulated and how the nervous, endocrine and human reproductive systems function.

Unit 13 – Biochemistry and Biochemical Techniques
In this unit you will investigate biological molecules, enzymes, metabolic pathways and the structure of proteins. You will also develop practical techniques needed for the study of biochemistry, including electrophoresis and thin layer chromatography.

Unit 18 – Genetics and Genetic Engineering
In this unit you will learn how genes are inherited and the structure and function of DNA. Practical work will include the extraction of DNA, DNA fingerprinting and amplifying DNA using the polymerase chain reaction.

 

Entry requirements

For all BTEC courses students must have achieved five A*-C at GCSE OR Equivalent including a C or above in GCSE English or Maths.
