IT (Software Development) BTEC Extended Diploma Level 3 at Burnley College

Course description

This course aims to give students a good understanding of how computer systems are used in industry, looking at topics including Information Systems and Systems Analysis and Design. Students will study Software, Games Design and Development topics to gain an understanding of how systems are designed and built. The course also provides students with knowledge of areas such as 2D and 3D graphics, animation and web & media production.

Students will use industry standard software for all subjects, while our dedicated classrooms have high-specification computer hardware for production of high-resolution graphics, games and animation. A range of gaming platforms are used to give students a holistic view of the industry. Students will use animation specialist resources, such as modelling clay, cameras & lighting.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade C or above including English Language or Mathematics OR a relevant Level 2 Diploma with Merit grade or above and a GCSE grade C in English Language or Mathematics.


Assessment is via coursework, presentations, creation of several products, such as game, business system and animations. There are also opportunities for volunteering/work experience and practical demonstrations.

Future opportunities

A range of university programmes including games enterprise, new media production, web design, computer science, computing and business related.
