Government and Politics at Carlton le Willows Academy

Course description

The aim of this specification is to allow students to develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of the political world, to become more aware, involved and questioning - all skills that can be transferred into higher study of this subject or beyond into law, business and life.

At AS level there are 2 units.

1. People and Politics

This covers the idea of democracy and what that means in the UK today, political parties and their ideas, as well as political pressure groups outside mainstream politics-such as student activists.

2. Governing the UK

This is more about the power in practice, how well parliament, the Prime Minister and the judiciary work.

At A2 students study two units.

Two units on Political Ideologies. This looks at the historical roots and development of key political ideas such as Conservatism, Socialism and Nationalism as well as more contemporary ideas about Ecologism and Feminism.

Two units on US Politics. This compares the US system to our own and looks in more detail at the President - the most powerful man in the world but powerless in his own country?
