Drama & Theatre Studies AS/A Level at Nicholas Breakspear Catholic School

Course description

Unit 1: Exploration of Drama and Theatre
Section A: Students are required to study two
plays in a practical and active manner. At least
one play will be explored in light of a recognised
theatre practitioner. In addition, students keep
an investigative record of textual analysis and
practical workshops undertaken.
Section B: Students are required to experience a
live performance and submit a written evaluation
of their experience.
Unit 2: Theatre Text in Performance
This unit offers students the opportunity to
demonstrate their knowledge and understanding
of theatre in a performance environment. Students
offer either a monologue or duologue, and take
part in a group performance of a dramatic text.
Unit 3: Exploration of Dramatic Performance
Students are required to create a unique and
original piece of theatre of between fifteen and
thirty minutes in length for presentation to an
invited audience. In addition they will produce
a written portfolio, evaluating the process,
development and final performance.
Unit 4: Theatre Text in Context
Students are required to explore in detail one
prescribed play from the viewpoint of a director
and research one prescribed historical period of
theatrical development.

Entry requirements

A minimum Grade C in English is required as well as enthusiasm and interest in the subject. GCSE Drama or other practical experience in this field is preferred.
