Sports Performance and Excellence BTEC Level 3 National Diploma at Poynton High School

Course description

This is intended as a Tech Level qualification, equivalent in size to two A Levels. It has been designed as part of a two year programme, normally in conjunction with one or more qualifications at Level 3. This qualification is aimed at students looking to progress to employment in sports performance or sports related university courses. These aspirations would be supported by taking complementary A Level qualifications alongside this course.

Course content

Learning Method:
Students will be primarily responsible for their own learning. Theory knowledge will be delivered, assignments set and students will then be expected to work independently in order to fulfil the criteria. Assessments may be made on written work, presentations or practical video evidence. There is also an optional unit that can be completed during a week-long residential in Wales.

Entry requirements

  • 5 grade Cs or higher at GCSE. An interest and enthusiasm for sport is essential.


External Assessment (33% of total qualification):
Unit 1: Anatomy and Physiology
Unit 2: Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Wellbeing
Internally Assessed Modules (subject to External Moderation):
Unit 1: Professional Development in the Sports Industry
Unit 2: Application of Fitness Testing
Unit 3: Sports Psychology
Unit 4: Practical Sports Performance
Unit 5: Coaching for Performance
Unit 6: Technical and Tactical Demands of Sport
Unit 7: The Athlete’s Lifestyle
Unit 8: Sports Performance Analysis

Future opportunities

After completing the full course, some students may choose to continue their education through a variety of appropriate university courses. Some students may also choose to move straight into work within the broad sports industry. Many students have been accepted at universities on a variety of sports based courses.
