Course description

MODULES/UNITS COVERED IN YEAR 12

A BTEC First Award is equivalent to one GCSEs grade A* ‐ C. It is a practical, work ‐ related course. You will learn by completing projects and assignments based on situations related to the construction industry and practical trade skills.

It introduces learners to a wide range of knowledge and skills which will give them opportunities to progress onto other courses.

What must I offer?

Pupils taking this course should have the ability to communicate well both orally and on paper, must be physically able to participate in a wide range of practical activities and competent enough to work within Health and Safety guidelines.

Course content

What subjects will I study?

The course is made up of four units, which is a mixture of core and mandatory units that provide a general foundation, and specialist units of particular topics in more depth.

Typically the units are:

Core

  • Construction Technology (External assessment)
  • Construction Design (Internal assessment)

Mandatory

  • Scientific and Mathematic Applications for Construction (Internal assessment)

Specialist – one from

  • Exploring Carpentry and Joinery (Internal assessment)
  • Exploring Trowel Operations (Internal assessment)
  • Exploring Painting and Decorating (Internal assessment)

Assessment

How will be assessed?

Students are assessed on a portfolio of evidence accumulated throughout the course and 25% by an external assessment. An overall grade for the qualifications is awarded to all students who successfully complete all units.

Grades awarded are Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*. Students must pass the external assessment to a level 2 standard, otherwise a level 1 will be achieved.
