A Level PE (Physical Education) at The King's Academy

Course description

The PE course studies the development of sports and pastimes from their inception to today, charting their role in society both in the UK and abroad. Practical work focuses on the way the body develops and responds to exercise. Candidates will require a high skill level, a wide range of sporting skills and a commitment to coaching and leading others.

Content of course

The AS Level comprises two units: Unit 1 - Opportunities for and the Effects of Leading a Healthy and Active Lifestyle.

3 sections - Applied Physiology, Skill Acquisition, and Opportunities for Participation 60% of AS marks and 30% of A-Level in a 2 hour examination 6 x 12 mark questions - 2 per section Unit 2 - Analysis and Evaluation of Physical Activity as Performer and/or in adapted roles.

2 sections

  • Section A - Assessment of ability to perform, analyse and evaluate execution in core skills as a performer, coach or official of which you have to choose two
  • Section B - Application of theoretical knowledge to a practical situation
  • 40% of AS marks/20% of A-Level
  • 1 x 12 mark question in Unit 1 exam The A2 comprises an additional two units: Unit 3 - Optimising Performance and Evaluating Contemporary Issues.
  • 3 Sections - Physiological and Biomechanical, Psychological, and Social-Cultural aspects of Sport.
  • 30% of A-Level marks
  • 2 hour Examination
  • 7 x 12 mark questions in 4 sections - similar structure to AS. Unit 4 - Optimising Practical Performance in a Competitive Situation.
  • 20% of A-Level marks
  • Students are required to perform, analyse and evaluate performance in a competitive situation identifying weaknesses and suggesting causes and corrective measures
  • Entry requirements

    At least a grade B at GCSE.
