Caring for Children BTEC Level 1 Diploma at Stafford College

Course description

It provides the underpinning knowledge and practical training for those wishing to work with children and families in a wide variety of settings.


Learners will learn how to respect and value children as individuals, how to tell stories, plan musical and creative experiences, and keep children safe.

Course content

The course is offered on a modular basis and is made up of a large number of childcare related units.  You will also undertake two short periods in a work placement.


English & Maths

We are committed to helping students improve their skills in English and maths.  Students on a full-time course at College who missed out on GCSE qualifications at grades A-C in these subjects at school will attend additional classes and receive support to enhance their grades.  Depending on individual ability, students will work towards GCSE, City & Guilds or Functional Skills awards to ensure that they have the qualifications needed to progress to university or employment.

Entry requirements

  • An E grade in GCSE English.
  • Students will be formally interviewed in order to assess their suitability to the course
  • 16 – 19 year olds in further education
  • Mature students returning to education
  • CRB check for those wishing to undertake vocational experience.


To gain the qualification each candidate must satisfactorily complete all assignment work for all units.

Future opportunities

Students who successfully complete the full programme as a Diploma, will be considered for the Level 2 course.  This could enable the student to work as an Assistant Nursery Nurse and work in the following settings: a day nursery, a residential nursery or nursery class, a hospital or as a nanny in a private family at home or abroad.
