Applied Science BTEC Advanced Diploma Level 3 at Fareham College

Course description

This course builds on your knowledge of basic science and develops an insight into more specialist areas and laboratory practices.

The course is designed to prepare you for work at technician level in scientific, medical and forensic laboratories.

Course content

Alongside developing your core knowledge of biology and chemistry, you will study and complete units in

  • laboratory organisation and practice
  • scientific principles and methods
  • crime scene investigations
  • forensic science applications
  • genetics
  • microbiology
  • physiology and medical applications
  • physics techniques
  • other aspects of biological, chemical and physical science.

In addition, all our courses teach you about how to collect and evaluate data effectively, how to investigate facts, use deduction and produce clear, engaging reports to reflect and present your findings.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade C or above including Science, Maths and English.


Assessment is largely by course work.

Future opportunities

The course is for students who wish to go onto university to study forensics, medical science or biological sciences at a higher level. You could go on to become a scientist or researcher, work in a medical field such as nursing or medicine, or pursue a forensic or criminology route.
