Photography BTEC Extended Diploma Level 3 at Southport College

Course description

Our photography course is exciting, demanding, challenging and intellectually stimulating. It offers you a broad learning experience within the field of art and design and is a great confidence builder; helping to improve communication and employability skills. The course has extensive facilities including a darkroom and photography studios.

Course content

The course focuses both on both traditional photography practice and digital work. It includes master classes and workshops run by internationally renowned photographers like Bruce Smith and Andrew Sanderson. The course has a large amount of practical work, which is supported by written work. You will study a range of subject areas including: 
• Darkroom application 
• Design methods 
• Computer applications including image manipulation and desktop publishing 
• Experimental imagery 
• Location techniques 
• Special studio techniques 
You will also study a range of core art and design modules including: 
• Drawing development 
• Historical and contextual understanding 
• Visual communication 
• Art & Design exploration, application and realisation 
A short work placement makes up part of the course. Previous students have worked with the Southport Visiter, gaining real time industry experience. You will also have the opportunity to enter many photography competitions and gain awards to sit alongside your qualification. 

Entry requirements

• Minimum 5 GCSEs at A*- C including English or Merit in a related Level 2 Diploma and C or above in English
• Good portfolio demonstrating visual awareness within art and design practice and evidence of a keen interest in photography 
• Successful interview 
• Satisfactory reference 

Assessment

You will be continually assessed throughout the course.

Financial information

Although some materials will be provided, you will be expected to provide your own paper, film, etc, which are sold through the College at a reduced rate.
There will be costs for trips during the two years.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of the course you can progress on to degree courses such as Photography, Fashion, Advertising, Film and Social Documentary Photography. Previous students have successfully attained places at institutions such as the Parsons College of Art in New York and Paris. You may also seek employment within the media industry as an Assistant Photographer or as a Technician. Jobs include photographer of cruise ship, hospital photographer, corporate, forensic photography, newspaper and magazine photography.
