Course description

Chemistry is concerned with materials of every description. It is often called the central science because it overlaps with both Biology and Physics. On the one hand Chemists unravel the chemical reactions that are responsible for life, and on the other they investigate new materials with exciting and potentially useful properties. The course is organised into teaching units, each of which is free-standing and tells its own story about modern applications of chemistry. A2 UNITS •Chemistry in Materials What’s in a medicine? The Materials Revolution The thread of life, The steel story Assessment: Written Exam, 1 hour and 30 minutes A Level 15% •Chemistry by Design Agriculture and Industry Colour and Design, The Oceans, Medicines by Design Assessment: Written Exam, 2 hours A Level 20% •Chemistry individual Investigation Assessment: A2 internal assessment A Level 15%

Future opportunities

You could take this course with other advanced level courses, which overlap with Chemistry such as Biology, Applied Science, Physics, Geography, Geology or more general subjects that may not relate to the sciences, to prepare for higher education. With further training, you could go into a job related to Chemistry or one of the other sciences such as a Doctor, Nurse, Scientist or Pharmacist. The course will also help you to develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
