Beauty Introduction Level 1 at Warrington & Vale Royal College

Course description

This foundation course provides the basics of beauty therapy and is an ideal stepping stone to anyone interested in working within the beauty therapy industry. You will be part of a team that will provide beauty therapy treatments within a professional training environment at 'The Academy' and will be supported by a team of experiences tutors. Training will be a mix of theory and practical lessons covering aspects of health and safety and anatomy and physiology.

Course content

The course includes the following topics:

  • Assisting with salon reception duties
  • Basic skin care
  • Applying make-up
  • Manicure
  • Pedicure
  • Nail Art
  • Themed face painting
  • Following Health & Safety
  • The art of photographic make-up
  • Working with others
  • Presenting a professional image

Entry requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs (E or above) with a willingness to learn and Entry 3 Maths and English.Applicants who do not meet these entry requirements will be assessed on an individual basis by the Curriculum Manager and Curriculum Director.


You will be assessed via practical assessments, internal assignments and internal tests that are related to the units of qualification. You will also produce a portfolio of evidence to record the knowledge and skills you have gained.

Financial information

You will need to purchase a Beauty Therapy kit, costing £154.85. Students will be able to carry on using this kit during Level 2 if they wish to progress. In addition, students are required to purchase a uniform of a cost of £37.40. You will need to purchase shoes that need to be black, flat and full for health and safety reasons as an extra.

Future opportunities

If Beauty Therapy is the career for you then progression onto VRQ Level 2 is the next step. Learners must achieve Functional Skills qualification before progressing onto Level two in Beauty Therapy or Level 2 Hair & Beauty.

Will I complete work placements?

As part of this course you will need to complete work placement. The College is committed to ensuring that all students benefit from the opportunity to undertake work placement whilst at College and we will support you to obtain a placement in a relevant vocational setting.

Are trips and residentials organised during the course?

Various trips are organised throughout the academic year relating to the beauty industry, including a trip to the GMEX to visit the annual Beauty Exhibition.

Are there any links with industry?

Industry specialists are regularly invited in to college to speak to students.

    • By Rail: Anyone travelling by train should disembark at Central Station in Warrington. Our Winwick Road Campus is around a 20 minute walk along the A49 (you will pass the Warrington Wolves RLFC stadium and the Tesco supermarket on your left).
