Creative Digital Media Level 3 at Lancaster and Morecambe College

Course description

This course is designed for anyone wanting to work in the creative media industries. You might want to be a computer games designer, a film maker, an animator or an interactive web designer. 

Course content

You will study the following 7 Mandatory units: • Pre-Production Techniques for the Creative Media Industries • Communication Skills for Creative Media Production • Research Techniques for the Creative Media Industries • Creative Media Production Management Project • Working to a Brief in the Creative Media Industries • Critical Approaches to Creative Media Products • Understanding the Creative Media Sector.

These will be followed by a range of optional units to allow you to explore a range of specialist areas. These could include: • 3D Modelling • 3D Environments • Drawing Concept Art for Computer Games • Computer Game Design • Computer Game Platforms and Technologies • Understanding Video Technology • Single Camera Techniques • Multi-Camera Techniques • Writing for Television and Video

The course is delivered through a series of assignments that are supported by theory and practical sessions. The course is approximately 65% practical and 35% theory (the majority of this forms background research, evaluation and planning for your productions). The course is designed to give you an allround experience of the creative media industries allowing you to make an informed choice about your career direction. All LMC students will receive tutorial support

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade A*-C including English and maths OR a Level 2 related qualification. Entry criteria will be applied at the discretion of the course manager. 


This course is continuously assessed using a range of methods including projects, assignments, coursework, practical performance, portfolio presentation and exam/online test. 

Financial information

Students will be required to make a contribution towards trips and special events. Also students will be expected to pay £30.00 at the start of the course. A mobile storage device i.e. pen drive is essential for the start of the course. Students will need to provide their own headphones for personal use, preferably the ones which go outside your ears as they are better for your hearing. Future opportunities

The course can lead to employment but most students will go on to higher education at HND, Foundation Degree or Degree Level. Your tutors will help you with progression opportunities.

Further information

You will be expected to undertake regular home study on this course.

On completion of this course you will receive Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production. This is equivalent to 3 A Levels and a recognised route to Higher Education.
