History (GCSE) at St Columba's Catholic Boys' School

Course description

“History” is not simply learning the facts about the past; it endeavours to develop skills within the pupil such as rationality, response, understanding and even sympathy; it seeks to examine a wide variety of source material and evidence. High standards are expected in terms of punctuality, presentation and a willingness to work in group situations. The regular completion of homework is seen as essential in promoting continuity between lessons and in developing good study habits. As well as providing a balanced presentation of study in itself, the course offers both a stepping stone to A-Level and Further Education as well as helping to develop the rational, analytical and open-minded young man that all employers are searching for. Therefore, History at GCSE Level has much to offer. Paper 1: Aspects of International Relations 1919-2005 and Depth Study: Germany 1918-1945 Paper 2: British Depth Study: How British Society Changed either 1890-1918 or 1939-1975 Paper 3: Historical Enquiry (Controlled Assessment) on The Role of the Individual in society or an in-depth study on a chosen aspect of Twentieth Century History
