Music A level at King Edward VI Sixth Form College
Music A Level is a unique blend of practical and academic work. You will develop skills not just as a composer and performer but also as a historian and analyst of music.
- Write music inspired by the study of composers, both old and new – the work is more structured and technical than most GCSE composition, offering new and exciting challenges (30%)
- Perform around 15 minutes of music in a recital at the end of A2, with a shorter examination performance at AS (30%)
- Analyse and listen to a wide range of music in order to understand how it is put together, how styles have changed from 1550 to the present day, and how music is used, for example, for film, dance and religious purposes (40%)
Grade 5 standard on an instrument or voice is a requirement for starting Music A Level. Your music theory should be at around the same level, which includes the ability to read standard music notation (not guitar tablature).
