Hairdressing Level 1 Diploma at Newbury College
This one year course which develops skills in Hairdressing is for students wanting to gain a well recognised qualification or to extend their current skills. The hairdressing units at Level 1 range from Shampooing and Conditioning to styling, application of colour and creating an image. You must ensure your attendance remains above 90% to enable you to be successful on your course.
You will learn a wide range of basic skills including shampooing/conditioning/conditioning treatments/temporary colour.
You will have the chance to go on external visits to different shows around the country . We also have guest speakers in to give practical and theory workshops.
As well as the taught units the course includes mandatory work experience. Students are encouraged to source their own work experience early in the programme.
Entry Level: Students will be required to attend an interview: Students will need to have four GCSE passes at grade E or above, preferably including Maths and English. Alternatively, students will be accepted on to the course if they have an equivalent vocational qualification at an equivalent level to GCSE grades E, and Functional Skills Maths and English, preferably at Entry Level 3. All students must have achieved, or show the ability to achieve, Maths and English to GCSE grade E or equivalent. Where a student has not yet fulfilled this requirement a functional skills qualification is a mandatory part of this course.
Most of the qualification is practical based with some classroom work. There are external exams for some units, these are multiple choice questions taken online. Assessments will be carried out through a combination of observation of practical work on clients, projects, assignments, case studies and written and oral questioning. Students build a portfolio of evidence. Students will also be required to achieve satisfactory results in Functional Skills.
From Hairdressing Level 1 you can progress to Hairdressing Level 2. At Level 2 you will learn about permanent colouring processes and how to cut and style hair. You can attend a Hairdressing Level 2 course at College or alternatively you could become a Hairdressing Apprentice.
