Art and Design BTEC Level 2 First Diploma at Nelson and Colne College

Course description

On this course you will continue to develop strong art and design skills. You will study modules such as fine art, digital image capture and editing, graphic image making, exploring specialist textiles techniques, non-resistant materials or studio photography, design methods and contextual references. Successful completion of this programme can lead onto a Level 3 qualification.

Course content

Unit 1: Introduction to Specialist Pathways in Art and Design
Unit 2: Creative Project in Art and Design
Unit 6: Investigating Contextual References in Art and Design
Unit 7: Recording for Creative Intentions in Art and Design
Unit 13: Visual Art Briefs
Unit 14: Photography Briefs

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade D or above (in a minimum of three different subject areas) including Maths and English, plus a satisfactory portfolio or Level 1 Diploma and Level 1 Maths and English, plus a satisfactory portfolio. Applicants who do not have a portfolio will be considered, but may have to undertake a short project to prepare them for the course.


Assessments throughout the course are in the form of assignments. The type and content of these assignments will vary depending on the particular units that are being assessed. All assignments are graded at Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*. Units 2 and 7 are externally assessed
